Episode Chronology

Story

In a Terrance and Phillip special, the Canadian duo must save Terrance's daughter Sally and all of Canada from the evil dictator Saddam Hussein.

Description

This special fart-intensive episode is a full-length Terrance and Phillip story, in which the two friends defeat an attempt by Saddam Hussein to conquer Canada. The story opens with Terrance's acquittal during a murder trial, in spite of overwhelming evidence of his guilt. The prosecutor nicknamed "Scott the Dick", who hates Terrance and Phillip and their fart comedy, swears to get the duo no matter what.

Scott the Dick allies himself with Saddam Hussein, who promises to eliminate Terrance and Phillip in exchange for Scott's help in a not-yet-explained scheme. Soon, word comes that Terrance's daughter Sally (whose mother is Celine Dion) has been kidnapped and taken to Iran. Terrance and Phillip fly off to Tehran, find the girl within minutes of landing and immediately go home.

They find Canada occupied by the vanguard of Hussein's army, which was smuggled into the country on Terrance and Phillip's return flight. Scott the Dick, realizing his folly, tells the duo that this is the beginning of an invasion. They decide to strike back during an Ottawa Rough Riders versus Vancouver Rough Riders Canadian Football League game, where Hussein plans to reveal his power grab and force Celine Dion to sing the Iraqi national anthem.

Hussein's coup is foiled when the crowd at the game farts in unison, unleashing a gas cloud that kills Hussein and his henchmen. Celine Dion then leads everyone in the singing of the Canadian national anthem.

Characters

Character Debuts

While we've seen Terrance and Phillip on TV many times prior to this, it's the first time we meet them in person. We also see their pets Barky and Purry, as well as Terrance's "bastard daughter" Sally and ex-wife Celine Dion.

Saddam Hussein, portrayed using real-life photos of the actual Iraqi dictator. Also Ugly Bob and Scott the Dick, who makes another appearance in "It's Christmas in Canada".

Body Count

Saddam Hussein and his henchmen, all overcome by poisonous anal emissions. Kenny doesn't die, because Kenny (or any of the other regular characters except briefly Cartman at the end) doesn't appear.

Behind The Scenes

Where Did The Idea Come From

Since the second season premiere was on April 1, 1998, this episode was an April Fools' joke at the expense of eager viewers waiting for the resolution of season one's cliffhanger "Cartman's Mom Is a Dirty Slut".

Pop Culture References

Shout Outs

This episode pokes fun at Canadian stereotypes. This includes saying "buddy" and "aboot", ending sentences with "eh", and eating "Kroff Dinner" (a parody of Kraft Dinner, or Kraft Mac & Cheese in the US). It plays on Americans' general ignorance of Canadian culture.

The episode's title is an homage to the 1991 Sally Field film Not Without My Daughter, in which she rescues her child from Iran. Terrance's daughter is not surprisingly named Sally.

When Scott questions Saddam Hussein about his plans for Canada he replies by saying, "I changed my mind. Pray that I do not change it any more," to which Scott replies, "This deal's getting worse all the time." The lines were originally spoken by Darth Vader and Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back.

Canada's HBC Network is a parody of NBC, using a turtle instead of a peacock as its logo. The HBC Movie of the Week is also a parody of the ABC Movie of the Week.

Pwn'd

Celine Dion, who not only bore Terrance's love child, but also became pregnant by Ugly Bob, a character so grotesque that he wears a bag over his head. Interestingly, when he takes off the bag he looks exactly like everyone else.

Terrance and Phillip eagerly flip on American television, first watching what appears to be Jerry Springer (on which several townspeople from South Park get into a brawl), and then South Park itself (the episode "Cartman's Mom Is a Dirty Slut" plays). Phillip laughs and says, "God damn, their TV shows are lame!"

Bonus Factoids

Public Reaction

South Park thought their fans would appreciate an April Fools' joke, but fans were upset and wrote more than 2,000 angry e-mails to Comedy Central within a week of the episode's broadcast. Some fans even harbored a grudge more than five years later. Matt's response in Entertainment Weekly was, "If you get that pissed off because you don't know who a little construction paper kid's father is, then there's really something wrong with you."

Pointless Observations

  • The football game between two teams called the Rough Riders is a jab at the Canadian Football League (CFL), which until 1996 did have two teams with that same name: the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
  • Saddam Hussein was born and based in Iraq. This episode has a running gag of confusing Iraq with Iran. At one point Iraq is confused with Turkey, as Phillip calls Saddam a "Turkish dictator".
  • Saddam is killed by fart poison then decapitated, but comes back as a villain in future episodes.
  • After the recaps in "Cartoon Wars Part II" and "Eat, Pray, Queef", this episode is parodied using the line, "And now the thrilling conclusion of [expected show]... will not be seen tonight, so that we can bring you this [unexpected show] special!"
  • This episode was first aired in the UK as the finale for season two after "Prehistoric Ice Man". The recap of "Cartman's Mom Is a Dirty Slut" was cut out.
  • During the scene where Sally is in the crowd of Iranians, a Visitor is in between two people on the left.
