Story

Description

The boys try to make extra cash by rounding up stray teeth and leaving them under Cartman's pillow for the Tooth Fairy. But they leave so many (112, including 15 in one night), that his mom is forced to admit she's the one handing out the money. The news that the Tooth Fairy doesn't exist stuns the boys. Kyle begins to question if anything, including himself, is real.

Nevertheless, they soon come up with a new scam -- placing teeth under the pillows of other kids, then collecting the money their parents leave. But they soon run afoul of a kid named Loogie, who masterminds a shadowy Tooth Fairy syndicate based on the same principle. The boys agree to handle Loogie's South Park operation in exchange for 2 percent of the profits -- and not having their penises cut off. Kyle is now consumed by the possibility of infinite alternate realities.

Cartman gets greedy and decides to cut Loogie out and keep all the money. The American Dental Association is on to the Tooth Fairy racket and sets a trap. Cartman, Stan and Kyle show up at the home of a kid with leukemia they saw on TV. The leukemia kid is supposed to get $600 from the Tooth Fairy for a bone marrow transplant. The ADA lies in wait and so do Loogie and his goons.

Just as the boys are about to be beaten to a pulp or arrested, Kyle winks out of existence, only to return as an all-powerful being that can bend reality to its will (which, for a moment, is a half-chicken half-squirrel monster). The dentists flee in terror. Loogie's criminal empire is destroyed. Kyle returns to our plane of existence, satisfied that though the thing we call "reality" may be ephemeral, the fact of our consciousness is not.

Behind The Scenes

Richard Belzer (who voiced Loogie, the kingpin of the Tooth Fairy syndicate) had to be impersonated in one scene because they couldn't get him to come in at 4 a.m. to redo some lines.

A "2000" was added to the title because at the time everyone was doing this sort of thing. Matt and Trey considered attaching 2000s to every fourth-season episode, but the joke ran out of gas after the first four.

Kyle's transformation is a parody of the closing sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and also references the 1982 Pink Floyd movie, The Wall.

The boys' motivation for the whole teeth-for-cash racket is buying a Sega Dreamcast. The gaming system had just been released in the U.S. several months earlier.

When the boys go to Cherry Creek (the richest neighborhood in Denver), they sneak into a kid's window that has Mega Man stickers on it. Cartman badly wanted Mega Man toys for his birthday in Damien.

Loogie, the mobster head of the Tooth Fairy syndicate, is based off of Marlon Brando's iconic character in The Godfather.

Kyle, in the midst of his existential crisis, questions whether Dan Rather is real. To which Cartman replies, "No man, that's just a TV show."

When arguing about who's got the better Tooth Fairy outfit, Cartman yells, "It's better than your dress! You look like a bad Jennifer Lopez nightmare!!!" This insult instigates a tooth fairy brawl.

A picture of Hillary Clinton is seen on screen as the newscaster finishes his story: "To which Ms. Clinton replied: 'I don't even like vagina.'"

Bonus Factoids

Pointless Observations

This is the first episode in which you can see Kenny without his hood. He is hurled out of his parka by Timmy's wheelchair, and thrown totally naked into the snow. Although his face remains unseen, you get a clear view of his signature blond hair.

Cartman yells at Stan and Kyle to move him "camera left", a reference to stage direction in television and film productions.

This episode features two iconic wardrobes for the boys: Cartman in the Tooth Fairy outfit, and all four boys dressed up as Pimp/Gangsters.

Cartman calls the bear on his shirt "Willikins Bear" here. He will refer to it mostly as "Wellington Bear" in the future.

During the montage, we see that Timmy was actually part of Loogie's tooth racket long before the boys got involved. He can be seen dressed as a tooth fairy hanging from a string (still in his wheelchair).

Though he never mentions the title of the book, it's obvious that Kyle is reading Meditations on First Philosophy by Rene Descartes. He paraphrases Descartes' famous statement, "I think, therefore I am," by saying, "This book says I don't exist unless I think I do."
